Following recent legislation, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) is close to becoming mandatory and permeable paving the norm for all hard surfacing requirements. ‘SUDS’ Standards
CCE Surfacing Resin Bound Surface is ideal for a large range of landscaping projects, and is suitable for driveways, courtyards, pathways, commercial premises, housing developments, etc.
The Resin Bound system prevents flash flooding, by holding the water in the voids around the stone, until the water can be absorbed into the ground. This method also reduces the risk of standing water. As this system is porous, water is able to freeze and contract without causing damage.
Traditional drainage is designed to remove floodwater as quickly as possible, to either watercourses or soakaways. This water is referred to as “run off”. This run off will contain pollutants arising from several different sources. In urban areas it is very likely to contain organic matter, as well as silt, oil/petrol derivatives.
Progressive urban development has resulted in an increase of run off to watercourses after heavy rainfall. Because rainfall can travel quickly to the watercourses via impermeable surfaces there is very little natural filtration to reduce levels of pollutants. In recent years there has been a significant increase of fast surface run off, causing major flooding. This is mainly caused by the immediate run off from hard paved areas rather than the much slower route through grassed areas, topsoil etc.
Permeable paving allows water to pass through the surface. Pollutants are trapped below the surface where many are broken down by natural processes. This also prevents water pooling on impermeable surfaces which can cause puddles and, in winter months, ice.
Planning permission will not be required if a new or replacement driveway
of any size uses permeable/porous surfacing (resin bound surfacing,) permeable concrete, block paving, loose gravel, or porous asphalt, or if rainwater is directed to a lawn or border and allowed to drain naturally.
Planning permission is required for any surface of more that 5 square meters if using traditional impermeable surfaces.

Sustainable drainage is a departure from the traditional approach to draining sites.
There are some key principles that influence the planning and design process enabling them to mimic natural drainage by:
· storing runoff and releasing it slowly (attenuation)
· allowing water to soak into the ground (infiltration)
· Slowly transporting (conveying) water on the surface
· filtering out pollutants
· allowing sediments to settle out by controlling the flow of the water
We can also replace our normal ‘sub-base’ with a ‘rubber crumb’ material, made from recycled car tyres, which is topped with a resin and aggregate top layer.
